In 2011, Martin Shaw and Michael Hill-Smith AM MW — founders of Shaw + Smith in the Adelaide Hills — travelled to Tasmania intending to buy nothing more than lunch. Many wines were tasted along the way, but the standouts came from Tolpuddle Vineyard, a site near Richmond established in 1988. The moment they drove through the gates it was love at first sight — and Tolpuddle Vineyard was soon purchased. Today, Tolpuddle Vineyard wines are released annually via a waitlist.
Located in south-east Tasmania’s Coal River Valley, the vineyard sits just outside the historic village of Richmond, around a 20-minute drive (26km) from Hobart.
Tolpuddle Vineyard takes its name from the Tolpuddle Martyrs — a group of British farm labourers transported to Australia in the 1830s after attempting to form a union.
The 20-hectare (50-acre) vineyard is dedicated exclusively to premium Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
The Tolpuddle Vineyard Tasting Room is an intimate space overlooking the vines, where guests can enjoy a guided tasting of current-release Chardonnay and Pinot Noir alongside a carefully selected back-vintage example. A seasonal Larder menu is available to complement your tasting.
