Experience the art of Australian craft spirits at Backwoods Distilling Co., a boutique distillery founded in 2017 by Bree and Leigh Attwood. From humble beginnings in a shed on their Yackandandah property, the couple have welcomed visitors to their distillery door and tasting room at the Yack Station Precinct since 2021.
Backwoods produces single malt and rye whiskies alongside gins celebrating native botanicals. Every spirit is made using Australian-grown grains, local casks, and native ingredients, earning awards including Champion Victorian Distiller 2024, World Whiskies Rye Category Winner 2022 and 2024, and Best Australian Single Malt Whisky in 2022 and 2025.
Visitors can enjoy guided tasting paddles or a freshly crafted cocktail beside the gleaming copper stills, view the working distillery, and take home their favourite whisky or gin. Guests can also book a Whisky Hand Fill experience, bottling a whisky straight from the barrel.
They are located just off Yackandandah’s main street and within walking distance of cafés and shops.
The distillery welcomes cyclists with bike racks, water refills and restrooms. Well-behaved dogs are also welcome, with indoor and outdoor areas available.
