Day Trip to John Brewer Reef and MOUA – A Living Underwater Gallery
Departing from both Townsville and Magnetic Island, this full-day tour takes you to John Brewer Reef — one of the most vibrant, unspoiled sections of the Great Barrier Reef. Situated further offshore, the site offers crystal-clear visibility, abundant marine life, and thriving coral formations.
The highlight is the Coral Greenhouse, part of the world-renowned Museum of Underwater Art (MOUA). Created by artist Jason deCaires Taylor, this awe-inspiring structure towers 12 m high and weighs 58 tons. It is recognised as the world’s largest underwater art installation and brings together reef conservation, marine science, and indigenous storytelling in one unforgettable snorkel or dive site.
Surrounding the sculpture garden, the reef teems with tropical fish, parrotfish, clownfish, turtles, rays, reef sharks, and the occasional Maori wrasse.
Tours operate aboard one of two custom-built vessels, both equipped with shaded seating, sun decks, onboard toilets, and easy water access. Optional dive guides and snorkel support are available.
