Located just two kilometres away from the Wangaratta city centre, this conservation reserve for River Red Gums can be easily accessed from a hidden gate along the Great Alpine Road. A Parks Victoria sign clearly marks the spot. The western boundary of the reserve is defined by Yellow Creek, an anabranch of the Ovens River, which also meets Reedy Creek at this point.
To enter the reserve, visitors have to walk through a rough vehicle track, as the entrance gate is locked to prevent vehicles from entering the area. This measure is in place to restrict cattle grazing under licence. The reserve is limited to nature study and bird watching activities only.
The area is home to a well-developed tall shrub layer of River Bottlebrush and a grassy (mostly weedy) understorey, providing an ideal habitat for various bush birds.
