Self guided tours of historic Bungaree Station provide visitors with an authentic insight into Australia’s pioneering past.

Established in 1841, this iconic property became the headquarters of one of Australia’s most successful sheep flocks, at a time when the country was said to ride “on the sheep’s back”. Bungaree became a small village with its beautiful sandstone Woolshed, Shearers Quarters, Stableyard, Station Store, Managers House, staff cottages and even the District Council Chambers and a Church. It is still a working farm, run by the 4th, 5th and 6th generations of the Hawker family today.

The self guided tour of the historic station complex is an interactive experience for visitors, comprising of a series of audioposts, signs and displays. Each audiopost also features stories suitable for children, who will enjoy exploring the wide open spaces.

Sites on the tour include the Station Store, Woolshed, Church, Stableyard and Homestead Gardens. Vintage tools, equipment and other artefacts from throughout Bungaree’s 184 years of history are also displayed.

Bungaree Station Tours

Explore SA’s pioneering past or learn about farming at historic Bungaree Station through a range of tours.

Established by George Hawker and his brothers in 1841, Bungaree became the headquarters of an extensive sheep station with 100 thousand merino sheep by the 1880s. It resembled a small village, with its own Church, Station Store, Blacksmith Shop and even the District Council Chambers , as well as its beautiful sandstone Homestead, Woolshed, Shearers Quarters, Stableyard, Managers House and other staff cottages.

Now, 184 years later, it is an efficient mixed farm run by the descendants of the original founder, G.C. Hawker. Consequently Bungaree Station is not a museum, but rather a living record of rural Australia since 1841.

Today visitors can explore the property’s rich history or the modern farming enterprise through several tour options.
