Since Rat Saw God landed with Pitchfork’s Best New Music stamp in 2023, Wednesday have been one of the most discussed bands in indie rock. Deservedly so. The North Carolina five-piece, led by songwriter Karly Hartzman, make music that sits somewhere between the scuzz of Dinosaur Jr and the lonesome highways of country, held together by Hartzman’s gift for rendering small, specific truths in ways that don’t stay small for long.
Bleeds, their sixth album on Dead Oceans, arrived in 2025 to universal acclaim and only sharpened the sense that Wednesday are one of indie rock’s essential live propositions. Their shows fold folk, shoegaze and noise rock into a single, physically overwhelming thing, built around Hartzman’s voice and the band’s instinct for knowing exactly when to pull back and when to let everything collapse forward.
Wednesday play The Princess Theatre for Open Season. For the scuzzy, the sublime, and everything in between.
Open Season is The Tivoli Group’s annual program of music, art and cultural events, transforming Brisbane into a winter playground for live performance each year. Open Season is independently owned and operated, and has funding assistance through the Live Music Office of the Australian Government and Arts Queensland.
