Twenty years on from its release, Passover sounds like it was made for exactly this moment. The debut album from Austin’s The Black Angels helped define the 21st-century psychedelic revival when it arrived in 2006, channelling the electric darkness of The Velvet Underground, Syd Barrett, Roky Erickson and Arthur Lee into something hypnotic, heavy and deeply political. To mark the anniversary, the band are touring it in full.
Formed in Austin in 2004, The Black Angels have become one of the most influential forces in modern psychedelic rock, a status cemented not only by their own recordings but by their role as founders of Austin Psych Fest, one of the world’s most important gatherings for psychedelic and experimental music. Albums including Death Song and Wilderness of Mirrors on Partisan Records have kept them at the forefront of the genre for two decades.
The Black Angels play The Princess Theatre for Open Season. For anyone who has been waiting twenty years to hear Passover the way it was meant to be heard.
Open Season is The Tivoli Group’s annual program of music, art and cultural events, transforming Brisbane into a winter playground for live performance each year. Open Season is independently owned and operated, and has funding assistance through the Live Music Office of the Australian Government and Arts Queensland.
