In the cool of early morning, they’ll explore remote, little-visited reaches of Corroboree Billabong with its extraordinary numbers of wetland birds, raptors and crocodiles. Later they’ll explore distinctive outback habitats along the rugged Marrakai track, a now little-used route that was the original track to the Kakadu region.

Guests will learn about the region’s environment and wildlife, and rich cultural traditions, stories and resource use on this small-group birding tour through diverse Top End landscapes by birdwatching boat and 4WD vehicle. They’ll take home images they’ll cherish and memories they’ll never forget.

Itinerary highlights

Corroboree Billabong

Corroboree Billabong, part of the Mary River system east of Darwin, is a vast wetland populated with thousands of a great variety of waterbirds, raptors, smaller birds and crocodiles. This area is at its best in the cool beauty of sunrise in a small boat set up for bird-watching and photography as you glide amongst paperbarks, pandanus and waterlilies while birds go about their business oblivious to you presence.

Marrakai Track

The Marrakai Track is a rough and rugged, unsealed road that was the original access to the Kakadu region. Get a sense of outback adventure as we look out for raptors, tree-creepers, cockatoos, finches, flycatchers and kingfishers.

Enjoy a cup of billy tea or bush barista coffee and a snack in the shade of large trees on the bank of the Adelaide River.

Operation information

Northern Territory Bird Tours

Northern Territory Bird Tours is a new venture from Northern Territory Indigenous Tours, a local family tour business established in 2009.

Its head guides bring extensive experience as Park Rangers in the World Heritage Areas of Kakadu and Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Parks, and as wildlife park guides. As passionate and highly skilled birders and bird photographers based in the Northern Territory, the company’s guides offer deep local knowledge and expertise.

The diversity of tropical habitats in the Northern Territory’s Top End supports a broad suite of spectacularly coloured birds, many of which can only be seen in this region. Northern Territory Bird Tours is ideally placed to showcase this wonderfully diverse avian fauna.

Northern Territory Bird Tours takes guests to birding hotspots well off the typical tourist trail for a truly unique and rewarding experience. Very small tour group sizes encourage interactive discussions and allow guests the best opportunities to spot a wide range of bird species.

Northern Territory Bird Tours holds all requisite permits, licences, insurances and training to ensure a professional and safe experience. Its tour vehicles are air conditioned, comfortable and specifically suited to local conditions.
