Each winter, this region hosts one of Australia’s most spectacular whale migrations, as Southern Right Whales gather to calve and play just metres from shore.
Travel in comfort from Ceduna to the remote wilderness of Fowler’s Bay and Head of Bight, encountering whales from land, sea, and optionally, the sky. Along the way, enjoy intimate wildlife experiences, feast on world-class seafood, including freshly shucked oysters straight from the ocean, and discover the rich character of the Nullarbor region. This is a journey packed with memorable wildlife moments, off-the-beaten-path exploration, and a true taste of South Australia’s wild west.

Itinerary highlights
Day 1 – Ceduna & Smoky Bay
Your Great Australian Bight whale watching adventure begins in Ceduna, with a 9:00 am airport pick-up for those flying in from Adelaide that morning, followed by hotel pick-ups around Ceduna at 9:15 am. Meet your guide and fellow travellers over morning tea, where you’ll get a taste of what’s to come over the next few days: untamed coastlines, incredible marine encounters, and delectable seafood.
Just a short drive down the coast brings you to the peaceful seaside town of Smoky Bay, where South Australia’s world-class seafood takes centre stage. Board a barge bound for SA Premium Oysters’ working lease, located 3km offshore, and learn about the region’s thriving oyster industry from the farmers themselves.
Come late afternoon, make your way back to Ceduna and settle into your beachfront accommodation. The evening is yours to enjoy. Perhaps take a stroll along the foreshore or dine at one of the town’s charming local restaurants, reflecting on a day of laid-back indulgence by the sea.
Accommodation: Ceduna Foreshore Hotel

Day 2 – Great Australian Bight & Nullarbor
Rise with the sun and journey along the wild, untamed coast to witness one of Australia’s most iconic natural wonders. Stretching over 100 kilometres, the Bunda Cliffs are the longest uninterrupted sea cliffs in the world. This clifftop vantage point offers Australia’s premier whale watching experience, as Southern Right Whales and their calves often glide gracefully through the sapphire waters below.
Enjoy a picnic lunch at the Head of Bight Whale Centre and this afternoon, cross into the heart of the outback for a truly unique Australian stay at the Nullarbor Roadhouse. Set against a backdrop of vast desert plains and endless skies, this character-filled roadhouse is rich in frontier history. Settle into your motel accommodation and dine at the on-site restaurant (own cost), where outback hospitality and rustic charm serve up a memorable end to a spectacular day.
Accommodation: Nullarbor Roadhouse Motel
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
Distance Travelled: Approx. 360 km
Day 3 – Nullarbor & Ceduna
After breakfast, it’s time for a true highlight of your journey as we head toward the remote coastal haven of Fowler’s Bay—a lesser-known South Australian gem offering some of the best close-up whale encounters in Australia.
Step aboard a two-hour wildlife cruise for the chance to see Southern Right Whales sheltering with their calves, alongside Humpback Whales, playful dolphins, curious sea lions, and even Little Penguins. The calm, sheltered waters here are rich with marine life, providing a memorable water-level perspective. While sightings can’t be guaranteed, as this is wild nature, after all, it’s rare to leave without a whale memory.
Back on shore, enjoy a relaxed lunch on the foreshore, with more time to soak in the serenity of this untouched coastal wilderness. Later, we begin our journey back to Ceduna, arriving around 3:00 pm. Guests with flights to Adelaide will be transferred to the airport, while others will be returned to their local accommodation.
Optional return flights and Adelaide accommodation add-ons are available at the time of booking. Please see ‘Know Before You Book’ below for details.
