Located about 200 km from Darwin, Shady Camp is one of the Top End’s most iconic fishing spots. It takes around 1 hour 40 minutes by car, or about 2 hours when towing a boat. During the Wet Season, access is 4WD only.

Famous for its run-off fishing season between March and April, the Mary River teems with barramundi, attracting anglers from all over. The surrounding landscape of monsoon forest, paperbark woodlands and freshwater billabongs makes this a picturesque destination for more than just fishing.

With up to 15 saltwater crocodiles per kilometre, the Mary River has one of the highest croc densities in the world. Spot them safely from the Shady Camp viewing platform, where you’ll also find abundant birdlife thanks to the barrage separating saltwater and freshwater habitats.

Facilities include boat ramps, picnic areas and toilets. Camping must be booked online before you arrive.

Whether you’re chasing barra or soaking in the view, always remember to Be Crocwise.

Purchase an NT Parks Visitor Pass before you arrive. NT residents are exempt.
