Discover the fascinating story of Guildford and the Swan Valley at “Cradle of the Colony”, an engaging exhibition located in the historic Guildford Courthouse —now home to the Swan Valley Visitor Centre.

Curated by the Swan Guildford Historical Society in partnership with the City of Swan and supported by Lotterywest, this museum-standard display features artefacts of state and national significance from the Society’s collection.

Begin with the enduring presence of the Swan River Aboriginal People, whose deep connection to Country is honoured through rare cultural artefacts. Learn about their first contact with Captain James Stirling’s party in 1827—a pivotal moment in Western Australia’s history.

Trace Guildford’s development as the inland port of the Swan River Colony through colonial hardship, the convict era, the gold rush, and the vital contributions of migrants, especially to the local wine and table grape industries.

Explore the original courthouse c.1866, which offers a rare glimpse into 19th-century justice and enjoy the display titled “Walking Through History: 100 Years of Wedding Dresses”, showcasing gowns, accessories, and stories of yesteryear that celebrate bridal traditions across generations.

The exhibition is open daily with free entry (gold coin donations welcome).

The Swan Valley Visitor Centre staff are on hand to help plan your visit and explore more of historic Guildford and the Swan Valley.
