Nestled in the heart of the historic Hobart waterfront, MACq 01 is Australia’s first storytelling hotel. Throughout the halls and across the walls of the hotel you’ll find engaging pieces of history, tales and fables that make up the remarkable history of Tasmania.
At MACq 01, their storytelling tours offer guests a deeper connection to Tasmania’s rich past. Led by gifted narrators, each experience invites you to step into the stories of the island—its people, places, and moments that shaped history.
Hidden Hobart: The Viewfinder Tour from Hunter Street to Salamanca Place, uses retro viewfinders to see through the eyes of someone who stood in the same spot up to 150 years earlier.
Sticky Stones & Secrets invites you to explore the haunts and hangouts of the old Hunter Street buildings, discovering the sticky stories behind the jam factory.
The 114 Doors tour guides you through a curated selection of stories and characters, each door revealing another chapter of Tasmania’s narrative.
The Henry Jones Art Tour Explore the living collection of 400+ Tasmanian artworks, with a guided tour of the art and heritage woven into every corridor.

Gin Tales is an immersive storytelling experience through gin tasting, with each gin representing the character traits of notorious Tasmanians.
Hosted by our storytellers, you are invited to sip your way through a flight of the exclusive MACq 01 gin range. Inspired by iconic Tasmanians, our bespoke suite of five gins encapsulate the essence of the 114 Tasmanian characters that feature throughout our hotel, each gin inspired by their bold and beguiling personality traits.
Starting: 4.30pm Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday at The Story Bar

Hidden Hobart: The Viewfinder Tour
Discover fascinating fragments of the history of Hobart that even locals would miss. As you wander from Hunter Street, through the centre of Hobart and onto Salamanca, you will use retro viewfinders to see today’s views through the eyes of someone who stood in the same places up to 150 years earlier. You won’t want to miss this captivating walking tour of Hobart.
Departing: 10am Daily from the MACq 01 lounge.
Duration: 90 minutes.
Price: $35 for visitors, complimentary for MACq 01 hotel guests.

For those with a penchant for intrigue, the Sticky Stones & Secrets Tour awaits. Their Storytellers will take you behind the scenes of the historic Hunter Street buildings, which are some of the oldest in Australia. Don’t miss exploring hidden haunts and hangouts, and the chance to delve into the secrets of the jam factory, discovering sticky surprises and stories that resonate through time.
Departing 12.30pm daily from the MACq 01 lounge.
Duration: 60 minutes.
One Hundred & Fourteen Doors
Enjoy a complimentary glass of sparkling wine and unwind before dinner as you explore a selection of the one hundred and fourteen stories of this unique hotel. On this must-do tour, their storytellers will bring to life the rich tapestry of MACq 01characters. You will leave entertained and enlightened on how the Tasmanian spirt was crafted.
Departing: 4pm Monday to Friday from the MACq 01 lounge.
Duration: 60 minutes.
Henry Jones Art Tour
Hosted by either our knowledgeable Art Curator or their Story Tellers, the tour explores the corridors of the hotel, explaining the contexts of artworks and the deep history etched in the fabric of our heritage buildings. Learn how the Henry Jones has become the contemporary art hotel that it is today. Enjoy a glass of wine or beer as the narrative of the site and its art unfolds.
The Henry Jones Art Tour commences at 4pm most days.
Bookings are complimentary to in-house guests and $35 per person for external guests.
