Itinerary highlights
The Northern Rivers Rail Trail
The Northern Rivers Rail Trail is located opposite our Mooball site, offering easy access to the southern end of the trail. It follows the route of the former railway line from Wooyung in the south to Murwillumbah in the north.
The trail passes through spectacular Tweed hinterland, featuring historic railway bridges, original rail infrastructure and several tunnels, including the 524m Burringbar Range Tunnel with glow worms.
The surface is a mix of compacted gravel and sealed sections, creating a smooth, car-free riding experience suitable for a wide range of riders. Along the way, there are a number of hinterland towns, cafes and places to stop and explore.
The Burringbar Range Tunnel
The Burringbar Range Tunnel is one of the standout features of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail. Stretching 524 metres, it is the longest tunnel on the trail and follows the path of the original railway line through the hillside. Inside, riders pass through a cool, atmospheric environment where glow worms can often be seen along the tunnel walls, along with microbats that inhabit the space. The tunnel is fully accessible by bike and offers a unique and memorable part of the ride.
Hosanna Farmstay
Hosanna Farmstay is a family-friendly stop located near the Northern Rivers Rail Trail, offering open green spaces, farm animals and relaxed countryside surroundings. It’s a popular place for riders to take a break, with a café, picnic areas and plenty of space for children to play. The setting provides a peaceful contrast to the trail, making it a great option to pause, rest and enjoy the hinterland environment.
Dunbible
Dunbible offers a peaceful stretch of hinterland riding, with open farmland (lots of cows) and wide rural views.
A highlight of this section is the restored Dunbible railway bridge, where riders cross above the surrounding countryside and take in the landscape from a unique vantage point.
The Margeret Olley Gallery & Apex Dining
The Margaret Olley Art Centre offers a fascinating glimpse into the life of one of Australia’s most loved artists, set within the Tweed Regional Gallery. With sweeping views across the valley, it’s a cultural highlight and a peaceful place to stop and explore.
Apex Dining is a scenic café at the Tweed Regional Gallery, offering fresh local food and sweeping views across the Tweed Valley. It’s a great place to relax, recharge and take in the landscape.
Murwillumbah Station
Murwillumbah Railway Station marks the northern end of the Rail Trail, where restored heritage buildings and original rail features bring the area’s history to life. With The Platform Café on site, it’s a popular place to pause, enjoy a coffee and take in the atmosphere before heading back.
