Join filmmaker Sharon Pippos for a special heritage event featuring the 45-minute documentary Echoes of the Past—a deeply personal exploration of the Prussian immigrants who fled religious persecution and arrived in South Australia in 1838 to build new lives.
Filmed entirely in Hahndorf and featuring respected voices, including descendants of the original settlers, the documentary brings to life stories of faith, resilience, community, and cultural identity that continue to shape the region today. Through intimate interviews, historic imagery, and evocative locations, Echoes of the Past offers rare insight into the people behind the history and the enduring legacy they left.
Prior to the screening, guests are invited to enjoy a 30-minute illustrated talk by local historian Sam Doering, focusing on the arrival of the Princess Louise in 1848. This group of immigrants—often referred to as the “48’ers”—were a distinctly different wave of settlers, bringing new skills, ideas, and influences that further enriched South Australia’s cultural and social landscape.
The Langmeil History Centre will be open prior to the event, allowing visitors time to explore its fascinating collections and exhibitions. The experience concludes with a guided 30-minute cemetery tour, offering a moving and tangible connection to the individuals and families whose stories are shared throughout the evening.
This immersive event combines documentary film, history, and place—an engaging experience for history lovers, locals, and visitors alike.
