Itinerary highlights

Lake McKenzie

Lake McKenzie (Boorangoora) on K’gari (Fraser Island) is one of the island’s most breathtaking natural wonders. This perched lake sits high in the sand dunes, filled only by rainwater – no creeks or streams flow in. Its pure, crystal-clear water is so clean and soft because it’s filtered by the surrounding white silica sand, which also makes the shoreline brilliantly white and cool underfoot.

The vibrant turquoise and deep blue shades of the lake change with the light, making it a photographer’s dream and a swimmer’s paradise. Surrounded by lush forest, it feels like a hidden oasis – peaceful, pristine, and truly magical.

Central Station Rainforest & Wanggoolba Creek

Central Station Rainforest is one of K’gari’s most enchanting stops. Once a bustling logging camp and forestry station, today it’s a peaceful window into the island’s lush, living heart. Towering satinay and brush box trees stretch skyward, while delicate ferns and mosses carpet the forest floor.

Crystal-clear Wanggoolba Creek winds gently through the rainforest, its sandy bed so white the water appears almost invisible as it flows. The air is cool, fresh, and filled with birdsong – a true escape into nature’s sanctuary.

Central Station isn’t just beautiful – it tells the story of K’gari’s cultural and natural heritage, blending history with the timeless wonder of the world’s largest sand island.

Eli Creek

Eli Creek is the largest freshwater creek on K’gari’s eastern beach – and one of the island’s most loved natural playgrounds. Flowing with up to four million litres of crystal-clear water every hour, the creek winds gently through lush banks lined with pandanus and swamp banksia before spilling out onto the sands of 75 Mile Beach.

Visitors can walk the boardwalk through the greenery and then float back down the creek’s cool, refreshing waters – a must-do experience on a warm K’gari day. Perfect for families, it’s nature’s very own lazy river!

Eli Creek is not only beautiful but also a vital freshwater ecosystem, supporting unique plant and animal life that thrive along its banks.

75 Mile Beach

75 Mile Beach is K’gari’s natural highway – a vast stretch of golden sand running along the island’s eastern coastline. More than just a beach, it’s where 4WDs cruise the shoreline, planes land on the sand, and adventure meets breathtaking scenery.

Along the way, you’ll discover some of K’gari’s most iconic attractions, including the rusted beauty of the Maheno Shipwreck, the bubbling natural rock pools of the Champagne Pools, and the freshwater flow of Eli Creek.

The beach is also a hotspot for wildlife – from soaring sea eagles above to humpback whales passing by offshore during migration season.

Whether you’re driving, exploring, or simply soaking up the endless ocean views, 75 Mile Beach is a true K’gari highlight that feels wild, rugged, and unforgettable.

Central Station Rainforest

Maheno Shipwreck is one of K’gari’s most iconic landmarks – a rusting beauty with a fascinating story. Once a luxury passenger liner, the SS Maheno was built in 1905 and even served as a hospital ship during World War I.

In 1935, while being towed to Japan for scrap, the Maheno was caught in a cyclone and washed ashore on 75 Mile Beach, where it has remained ever since.

Today, the weathered remains of the ship sit partly buried in the sand, creating a striking contrast against the golden beach and turquoise ocean. It’s a photographer’s dream and a living reminder of the island’s maritime history.

Pile Valley

Pile Valley is one of K’gari’s most breathtaking rainforest pockets, where towering satinay trees and kauri pines rise sky-high from the sandy soil. These ancient giants are a living reminder of the island’s logging history – their durable timber was once prized worldwide, even used to line the Suez Canal.

Walking through Pile Valley feels like stepping into a natural cathedral: sunlight filters through the dense canopy, the air is cool and fresh, and the forest floor is alive with ferns, vines, and bird calls.

Today, this World Heritage-listed wonder is protected, allowing visitors to experience the serenity and grandeur of one of the most unique rainforests on Earth – one that grows entirely on sand.
