The Larapinta Trail is an exciting long distance walking track through the West MacDonnell National Park in the heart of central Australia. The Trail runs for 223 kilometers along the backbone of the West MacDonnell Ranges from Alice Springs to Mt Sonder.
The Trail crosses a variety of terrain: from high exposed ridge lines with spectacular views, to lush, sheltered gorges that are home to many of the arid zone’s rare plants and is divided into twelve sections, providing walkers with an opportunity to experience an ancient landscape at their own pace.
Campsites, including some minor facilities, have been developed on the more frequently used sections of the Trail. Elsewhere recommended spots for camping are identified, but no facilities are provided. The Trail is signposted with direction markers, especially at major track junctions, crossing points, spur takeoffs and other possible points of confusion. The entire route is also posted with distance markers and each individual section marked in its own right.
