The Wet Tropics of Queensland has a huge variety of fungi species! We are fortunate to have consistent mushrooms such as Stinkhorns (Phallus species), Polypores, Fans, Brackets, Boletes, Ascomycetes (zombies), Corals, Birdnest fungi and Slimemolds all waiting to be seen and photographed. This is the only specialised mushroom and fungi photography walking tour in Australia.

Bridgette has spent hundreds of hours in the gardens learning the many locations and cycles of the fungi kingdom. Her huge collection of photographs is a testament to the vast amount of fungi on offer for you to capture some photographs of your own. If you are bringing your own camera, we can help you with your camera settings and composition ideas, techniques, and suggestions for capturing amazing images of the mushrooms that we encounter.

The tour will be a leisurely stroll through the gardens taking time to see and photograph these beautiful lifeforms.

Photography equipment is not required, however we do offer specialised macro photography equipment for Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced. Tour participants can also capture amazing shots using a smartphone.

Mushroom Photography in the lush surroundings of the Cairns Botanic Gardens

“I’ve spent over a thousand hours in last few years finding and photographing fungi in the Cairns Botanic Gardens. There is an overwhelming number of species, colours and formations right here on our doorstep.” Says tour creator Bridgette Gower.

“The tour is a welcome addition for visitors to Cairns as well as something new for locals to experience.”

The tour takes place in tropical paradise – Cairns Botanic Gardens, Bridgette will share with you several locations she has discovered that hides the most fascinating fungi!

Aussie Macro Photos

Now in its fifth year, Aussie Macro Photos boasts the most unique tours in Cairns. Nature enthusiasts and photographers alike rate Let’s Go Buggin Tours as their highlight experience in the Wet Tropics. A fast-track way to get up close and personal with all the little things that live in the Cairns Botanic Gardens.

The smorgasbord of native wildlife seen is abundant and varied. From beatles to bugs, frogs to fungi, spiders to reptiles… tour participants are wowed by creatures they never knew existed.

By far the most popular tour is the Let’s Go Buggin Night Walks in which participants see creatures that are rarely seen including bizarre Net-casting Spiders and Stick Insects as well as other nocturnal animals like Scrub Pythons, Striped Possums, Papuan Frogmouths to name a few.

Specialised macro photography equipment is available for hire and with Bridgette’s settings and assistance, participants can get incredible photos of their experience.
