The Muscle Creek Cultural Heritage Walk in Muswellbrook offers locals and visitors a chance to explore the natural and cultural history of this important waterway.
Led by Muswellbrook Shire Council in partnership with the Polly Farmer Foundation and the Follow the Dream after-school program, the project has restored the creek’s environment and created a walking loop with interpretive signage. The signs share stories about the area’s Aboriginal cultural significance, local history, and the ecology of the creek.
Muscle Creek, named after the freshwater mussels that were once common in its waters, runs through the heart of Muswellbrook. Once overgrown and littered, the creek has been cleaned up and revitalised as a community space.
A key feature of the walk is an augmented reality (AR) experience. Visitors can use their smartphones to access additional stories, images, and insights at various points along the trail.
The completed walking loop offers an engaging and accessible way to learn more about the area while enjoying a peaceful natural setting. It’s a great example of how cultural heritage, education, and environmental care can come together in a public space.
