For two decades, Ballarat artist Pete Walker has used creativity to educate trauma-informed young people. He also describes his own art practice as an essential part of his identity and self-care.
His sculptural materials are comprised of small scraps, broken fragments and detritus sourced from the streets of Ballarat. For the artist, these items are chosen for their embodied histories, as symbols of a calm after the storm. By reusing the objects in sculptures, Walker returns their value by accepting and elevating them as they are. Walker approaches art as a method to heal at every opportunity.
