Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail - 6 Days Group Guided

Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail – 6 Days Group Guided

Auswalk has been guiding Kangaroo Island walking holidays for nearly 20 years, walking the island and parts of the trail that have subsequently morphed into the Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail. Their Kangaroo Island walking holidays explore the full length of the wilderness trail. Given that the island is the third-largest in Australia, it has a lot to offer, but it can only be fully explored on foot.

With over a quarter of the island’s area protected within national parks, it’s a paradise for walkers and naturalists. Tall limestone cliffs dominate the coastline and deeply incised creeks flow out to sea. As well as stunning stretches of coastal landscapes are vast areas of wilderness and highly visible terrestrial and marine wildlife.

Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail - 5-Day Group-Guided

Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail – 5-Day Group-Guided

The Kangaroo Island Wilderness trail is on Australia’s third largest island and newest bucket list walk. Forests, lagoons, white-sand beaches and sea cliffs pounded by thunderous swells are just a small part of what makes this island unique. This island is a celebrated feral-free haven, moreover with a quarter of the island’s area being protected it is no wonder the native animals flourish. But if walkers are surprised at how easy it is to see marsupials and wildlife, they’re even more astonished by the scale and diversity of the place.

They see the diversity and scale close up by hiking the 61-kilometre Wilderness Trail that takes in Flinders Chase forests, the surreal sculptures that are Remarkable Rocks, Admirals Arch, untrammelled beaches and kilometre upon kilometre of cliff top hiking. They also walk Ravine des Casoars a true path less travelled walk.

Other highlights are Kelly Hill Caves and the 7000-strong colony of fur seals that take refuge in the stunning sands at Seal Bay, frolicking on rocky platforms.

With its’ dense forests, green wetlands and stunning stretches of coastal terrain, Kangaroo Island is a hiker’s dream, a true paradise for walkers and naturalists alike.

Expect breathtaking coastal scenery, magnificent coastal forest and an abundance of wildlife. A quarter of the island, Australia’s third-biggest, is protected within national parks, making it a sanctuary for native animals, like platypus and Koalas. The 67km purpose-built walking track meanders its way through eucalypt and mallee forest via stunning stretches of coastal landscapes.

The tall limestone cliffs dominate the landscape, the same cliffs that played havoc with at least 60 ships that foundered themselves on these shores. There’s nothing between you and Antartica other than the massive Southern Ocean. Interestingly, the upwelling here provides a one of a kind haven for marine wildlife like whales, seals and dolphins so keep your eyes peeled.

Flinders Ranges 7 Days - Self-Guided

Flinders Ranges 7 Days – Self-Guided

The Heysen Trail, some 1200 km of it, is rated as one of the world’s premier long-distance trails. It begins in the Northern Flinders Ranges carving a path through and sometimes up and over the ranges. Its terminates in Cape Jervis in the South of South Australia, having made its way through places like Claire and the Maclaren vale. We hike what’s unreservedly considered the most scenic section of the track.

This walk is a shortened version of the 8-day itinerary, missing a lengthy 19 km day that can’t be shortened. The Northern Flinders has some of the most stunning outback scenery in Australia, rivalling anything in the interior. Its accessibility from Adelaide gives it a distinct advantage over some of the more lauded destinations, like the Kimberley, as it comes at a fraction of the cost and time commitment. The pay off is more than just the time saved, but the only way to find out is to walk it, as it is impossible to access otherwise. Hike from Aroona Ruins in the North of the Northern Flinders via Trezona and Yanyanna Huts to Wilpena, Tanderra Saddle all the way to Black Gap.
