Wheels Across a Wilderness 60th anniversary expedition
In 1966, Mal and Mike Leyland embarked on Wheels Across a Wilderness — an extraordinary adventure that forever changed how Australians saw their own country. The Leyland Brothers’ pioneering spirit, ingenuity, and love of exploration inspired generations to venture into the outback and beyond.
Now, 60 years later, the legacy continues.
In May 2026, Carmen Leyland (daughter of Mal Leyland) and Jon Evans will recreate the original “Wheels Across a Wilderness” expedition, retracing every step of that iconic journey. Health permitting, Mal Leyland himself will join the expedition, reuniting with the land and legacy he helped make famous.
This four-week journey will not only celebrate one of Australia’s most beloved adventure stories but also raise funds for the creation of the Mal Leyland Museum and Gallery, preserving their history for generations to come.
Outback Ballooning Adventure
Join an Outback Ballooning Adventure offering a range of hot air balloon experiences designed to showcase the vast beauty of Central Australia’s Red Centre from above. Their flights are not just simple scenic rides—they are carefully curated sunrise adventures that combine breathtaking views, peaceful flight, and a memorable outback-style landing experience.
Offering two core flight options: a 30-minute flight and a 60-minute flight. Both experiences take place in the early morning, just before and during sunrise, when the desert landscape is at its most visually striking and weather conditions are calmest. Guests are collected before dawn and transported to the launch site, where they can watch the balloons inflate against the backdrop of the waking outback. This pre-flight experience adds to the sense of anticipation and immersion, setting the tone for what follows.
