The Barossa cookbook was compiled in 1917 as a war effort fund raiser.
Using the companion cookbook ” Rolling up their sleeves” printed over 100 years ago, as the central inspiration for this exhibition, it delves into the archives, weaving together the central place food had in the social history of Waikerie and the surrounding districts.
Many original descendants spread to the Riverland bringing their cultural traditions with them food being an essential factor in keeping communities together.
The residents of Waikerie have been invited to remember and provide anecdotal stories to the contribution that food has made in the ongoing cultural development of the town when family life was much closer. At the Rain Moth gallery opening, Sharalee, one of the authors of the book, has kindly offered to share her love of food and the journey that inspired her to keep historic recipes and skills alive, thus contributing to our history.
Please join them for the opening of this exhibition on Sunday the 3rd of May at 2p.m. This exhibition is part of the S.A. History festival and will be on all of May.
