In 1994 unusual trees were found in the rugged Wollemi National Park, northwest of Sydney. Named the Wollemi Pine (Wollemia nobilis) it is a conifer whose location in the wild remains a secret to ensure its survival. This tree, from the time of the dinosaurs, is one of the world’s rarest plants with only three stands of adult trees known to be growing in New South Wales. This one was planted in the Gardens in 1996.
