The Cairn – Indicates the site of the first Post Office.

The South Australian Company store houses were constructed on this site. The original building on this site was used as a dwelling between 1857 and 1883 than as a post office between 1871 and 1883. A cairn made partly of locally made brick stamped with a Kangaroo and the letter K.I. is on the original site near the beach overlooking the Bay of Shoals.

As you wander around the site you will see the well supplied water to the first settlers. Further along you will come across hollows where settlers’ dwellings existed, and to an early road cutting. Take time to walk to the top of Flagstaff Hill, to enjoy breathtaking views, both of Kangaroo Island and across Backstairs Passage to Cape Jervis, on the mainland of South Australia.
