Discovery Experiences – Undara
Only 3½ hours drive from Cairns and four hours from Townsville in Tropical North Queensland, you’ll discover a land so different in contrasts…. Undara.
Just off the Savannah Way and easily accessed by conventional vehicle, Undara Experience is beside the Undara Volcanic National Park.
The Undara Lava Tubes are a world-class, natural geological phenomenon. Huge tubes formed approximately 190,000 years ago when molten lava drained out under a thick cooler crust, leaving a series of long, hollow tubes. Water seeping through the roofs and walls has resulted in breathtaking colourations. Lava Tube roof collapses provide a protected area from which ancient vegetation now thrives sustaining species not found anywhere else in the local region.
Today, trained Savannah Guides conduct small group tours into the lava tubes where visitors marvel at these impressive geological wonders.
The Wildlife at Sunset tour is not to be missed. Enjoy refreshments as the sun sets. As dusk settles, a visit to the entrance of Barker’s Tube allows you to witness the amazing bat emergence as literally thousands of microbats leave to feed at night.
