More than just a white-water adventure, rafting the Franklin River takes you on a journey through one of the last great wildernesses on Earth.

Carving its way through Tasmania’s World Heritage-listed South-West, the Franklin flows through tranquil reaches, surging rapids and spectacular gorges. Along the way, you might spot a platypus in the eddies, a sea eagle soaring above, or pink robins darting around the rivers edge.

The devoted team of highly experienced guides is looking forward to sharing their deep respect and love for this truly magical place with you. This ‘bucket list’ trip lets you connect with nature, recharge, and awaken your adventurous spirit.

Water by Nature Tasmania has been guiding people down the Franklin River since 2003. Founded by Brett, who’s been paddling here since 1987, the company is shaped by decades of hands-on experience and a deep respect for this remarkable river. Their main lead guides — Brett, Klaudia, Nick and Jed — have collectively spent more than 3000 days on the Franklin. Safety is a core part of their ethos: they approach each trip with great care and an intimate understanding of how the river behaves in all conditions.

Let them help you plan the Franklin River adventure you’ve been dreaming of.

7 or 8 Day Full Franklin River Rafting Expedition

7 or 8 Day Full Franklin River Rafting Expedition

This seven-day adventure takes you to the full navigable length of the Franklin River, deep in the heart of Tasmania’s Wilderness World Heritage Area. Negotiating the untamed waters of the Franklin River is one of the world’s best whitewater rafting adventures. The rafting starts on the Collingwood River, which soon joins up with the Franklin. We will rocket through the rapids of Descension Gorge and enjoy the serenity of the beautiful ‘Irenabyss’ or chasm of peace. As well as rafting through the Great Ravine, one of Tasmania’s most spectacular gorges we will be spending some time along the lower reaches of the Franklin with its thick temperate rainforest punctuated by limestone cliffs and strange rock formations. This trip is adventurous, a reasonable level of fitness is important and should increase your enjoyment of this trip.

Unpredictable river levels mean our trip will always be an adventure – it is possible to encounter both very low levels and floods within days of each other. Whatever the level, rafts offer the best way to explore this unique wilderness.

5 Day Lower Franklin River Rafting Expedition

5 Day Lower Franklin River Rafting Expedition

This five-day wilderness adventure explores the lower forty kilometres of the Franklin River World Heritage Area. Following an early breakfast, we board our four-wheel drive vehicle for an exciting and spectacular trip over Mt. McCall to the river. After packing the rafts and a safety talk we head down Propsting Gorge and through the exciting Trojans rapids before arriving at Rock Island Bend to tackle the famous Newland’s Cascades. This section will have everyone whooping with delight as we plunge through a maelstrom of spray and whitewater. At rapids’-end is a place for a deserved break. On the bank, natural overhangs provide the ideal shelter. As well as some exciting rafting, you will enjoy days of easy paddling where you will have plenty of time to take in the serenity of this unique region and explore some of its caves and side creeks.

This tour is ideal for families with young children and to get a ‘Taste of the Franklin River’. A reasonable level of fitness is important and should improve your enjoyment of this trip.
