Experience the great humpback migration from August to October, and witness these gentle giants up close for an unforgettable wildlife encounter. Admire mothers and calves playing in the bay’s calm waters or watch in awe as the inquisitive adolescent whales approach the boat. Marvel as the humpback whales breach and slap their pec fins and tails, as the experienced skippers share their knowledge of these wondrous creatures.

Itinerary highlights

Platypus Bay

In this neck of the woods the Humpbacks aren’t just passing through on their way to their breeding grounds each August through October – they’re actually taking time out in the pristine waters off K’gari (Fraser Island) to socialise, have some fun, learn some essential lifeskills and nurture their young.

For whale watchers it really is a question of who is watching whom on these great days out… guests are encouraged to wave their arms, stamp their feet and make a bit of noise – the whales love it.

Their natural curiosity takes over and they glide up to the boats to have a look at what the ‘silly’ humans are doing now – in return the Humpbacks put on an almighty show – slapping their tails, shaking their pec fins and leaping into the air, only to splash down.

Whale Watch Cruise

Experience an unforgettable up-close wildlife encounter with the majestic humpback whales, on a K’gari (Fraser Island) Whale Watch Cruise. Regarded as the whale watching capital of the world, the calm, clear and protected waters of Hervey Bay Marine Park offer excellent viewing, due to the number of whales in the region, and from being sheltered by Fraser Island.

Between August and October each year, over 1,500 whales take time out from their migration to spend anywhere from a day to two weeks relaxing, playing and nurturing their calves.

During this time, Kingfisher Bay Resort on Fraser Island offers daily whale watching cruises to get you out amongst the whales while they play. Operating in conjunction with Quick Cat II, the qualified skippers provide extensive commentary on the whale’s behaviour. The whales are curious about the whale watch boats and often come in close to dive under the boats and swim around them.

Witness these gentle giants rise out of the water in a spectacular breach, wave their pec fins or make a splash with their tail flukes, for the thrill of a lifetime. They have adopted COVID Safe best practices and are fully compliant with all Queensland Health guidelines.
