The Story Bridge Adventure Climb (SBAC) is marking a significant milestone for accessible tourism in Australia with the world’s first accessible bridge climb from Howard Smith Wharves soon to be open to the public.
People with accessibility requirements including wheelchair users will soon be able to experience the thrill of scaling Brisbane’s iconic Story Bridge in a specially designed wheelchair.
The motorised stair climber wheelchair is of the highest safety standard and has been customised using advanced technology especially for the Story Bridge. The advanced wheelchair ensures guests with accessibility requirements can expect smooth and safe movement over inclines, ergonomic design for guest comfort and integrated safety features.

General access
- Offers multiple options for booking – web, email, phone is available.
- Companion Cards are accepted.
- Accessibility information and photos, including of a bathroom, room and/or floor plan on their website (can be emailed on request).
Communication
Welcomes and assists people who have challenges with learning, communication, understanding and behaviour. (includes people with autism, intellectual disability, Down syndrome, acquired brain injury (ABI), dyslexia and dementia)
- Staff are trained in communicating with people with learning or behavioural challenges.
- Uses Plain English / easy read signage and information (includes menus and emergency information)
- A quiet space is available at the venue/ facility.
Vision
Caters for people who are blind or have vision loss.
- Information in audio format (includes an audio described map of their venue, audio descs of performances and/ or displays) is available.
Physical – Mobility
Caters for people with sufficient mobility to climb a few steps but who would benefit from fixtures to aid balance. (This includes people using walking frames and mobility aids)
- Uses floors/coverings which are slip resistant, firm and smooth
- Uses non-slip tiles in the bathroom or slip resistant matting
Physical – Wheelchair
Caters for people who use a wheelchair.
- Step free outdoor pathways (includes picnic areas, barbecues and shelters)
- A step free main entrance to the building and/or reception area (includes ramps or slopes with a maximum gradient of 1:14, otherwise are too steep for wheelchairs)
- Step free access to restaurant, lounge and bar
- Lifts with enough space for people using a mobility aid to enter and turn around to use the lift buttons. Buttons are at accessible height.
- Doorways which are easy to open and have lever handles (doorways 850mm or wider when open and not heavy).
- An accessible public toilet which is unlocked.
- A wheelchair accessible toilet / shower and change room is available.
- Portable hoist is available.
- At least one wheelchair accessible parking space with wheelchair accessible signage clearly displayed (International standards are 3200mm wide x 2500 mm high).
- Wheelchair accessible transport options available in the general vicinity (provide information on name of the operator, phone and website link to individual providers for private vehicles, community transport train, mini vans, hire cars, buses, taxis, ferry, tram, light rail etc in their access statement).

The iconic Story Bridge Adventure Climb has relocated to the North Side of the Bridge at Howard Smith Wharves, offering a fresh perspective on the stunning city! As one of only three bridge climbs in the world, this must-do adventure now includes the historic North Arm Climb, open to the public for the first time ever. This exciting move creates a seamless experience for climbers, blending thrilling heights with world-class dining and entertainment at Howard Smith Wharves.
They are now located between Crystalbrook Vincent Hotel and Betty’s Burgers.
From dawn to dusk and twilight climbs, you’ll experience breathtaking views of Brisbane’s skyline, the Glass House Mountains, Moreton Bay, and the Scenic Rim. The expert climb leaders will keep you engaged with fascinating stories of Brisbane’s history, making every step an unforgettable moment.
The Story Bridge Adventure Climb is a premium, family-friendly experience for climbers from the age of 6.
