Description
Short Description
Enjoy 80+ km of South Australia’s Limestone Coast on the pilgrimage trail known as the Aussie Camino, fashioned on the great pilgrimage trails of Europe.
Standard Description
The taste of the Aussie Camino takes in 80+ kilometres of S.A.’s Limestone Coast, fashioned on the great pilgrimage trails of Europe.
This section starts in Port MacDonnell on the southern most coast of South Australia, an extension the Great Ocean Road, half way between Melbourne and Adelaide. It was here that Mary MacKillop boarded a boat to Adelaide. Over four days pilgrims walk to the city of volcanic lakes and sinkholes, Mt Gambier, through the quaint town of Kalangadoo and on to Penola, finishing where Mary’s dream of education for all became a reality.
Undertaking a pilgrimage is more than a great walk. It is a time to visit your inner self; your own mortality, spirituality, weaknesses and inner strength. All within the context of Mother Nature’s best and the shared compassion of others undertaking their own pilgrimage. It is a chance to walk alone, meditate or share.

The Aussie Camino
The Aussie Camino® is a pilgrimage route running from Portland in Victoria to Penola in South Australia, inspired by the life and journeys of Australia’s Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop and her mentor Fr Julian Tenison Woods. Based on the traditions of the Camino de Santiago de Compostela, if you join a guided walk pilgrims receive a guidebook, passport, scallop shell and stay in the local towns along the way. Groups are organised by tour companies and depart at various times of the year. You can choose to start in Portland VIC or Port MacDonnell SA.
Those who are extremely hardy and have experience in unsupported multi-day walks may want to organise their own group. However, for those lucky enough to have walked on a European camino, we advise that the Aussie Camino has a much shorter tradition and is less supported.
