At Simpson Park in Muswellbrook, cultural heritage signage shares important First Nations stories connected to the local area. Developed with local Elder Uncle Glen Morris and Aboriginal community member Amanda (Mandy) Howard, the sign features the platypus Dreaming story told by Uncle Glen, and Amanda’s Mother’s story about Muscle Creek.

The sign’s design was created by local artist Leanne Ward, whose artwork brings these stories to life and adds a strong visual connection to Country. Visitors can listen to both stories by scanning the QR code featured on the sign. Leanne is well-known to the local community as a talented painter, photographer and mosaic artist, and her work can be found throughout the region.

This project was supported by Muswellbrook Shire Council, the Follow the Dream program, the Polly Farmer Foundation, and the NSW Government through the Environmental Trust.

While visiting, you can also enjoy the Muscle Creek walking loop. The track is clearly signed and offers a pleasant walk through native bushland, with opportunities to learn more about local ecology and cultural heritage.

The signage at Simpson Park is a valuable part of Muswellbrook’s cultural landscape, offering locals and visitors the chance to reflect on First Nations stories, art, and connection to place.
