The Blue Mountains is a rugged region west of Sydney in Australia’s State of New South Wales. Known for dramatic scenery, it encompasses steep cliffs, eucalyptus forests, waterfalls and villages dotted with guesthouses, galleries and gardens. Katoomba, a major town in the area, borders Blue Mountains National Park and its bush-walking trails. Echo Point affords views of the storied Three Sisters sandstone rock formation.
Other towns include Leura, known for its gardens and chic vibe, and Faulconbridge, site of the Corridor of Oaks planted by successive Australian Prime Ministers and the natural attractions of the tiered Wentworth Falls. The Blue Mountains − named for the eucalyptus haze over them − also encompass Wollemi National Park, known for its wild rivers and rare Wollemi pine.
Itinerary highlights
Wentworth Falls
Heading west across Sydney, the route begins its first leg along the M4 motorway. Meandering through scenic towns and villages, including Springwood, Faulconbridge and Hazelbrook, the drive winds its way to the town of Wentworth Falls. Punctuated by beautiful historic buildings, Wentworth Falls offers great views of the Jamison Valley and the ethereal falls after which the town is named.
Leura Village
Leura Village is one of the prettiest town centres in the Blue Mountains and is classified by the National Trust. You’ll be surprised and delighted by galleries and antique shops. Stop for a leisurely lunch or afternoon tea, pick up some picnic supplies or just browse the merchandise.
Leura is famous for its magnificent displays of Springtime colours and glorious cool climate Spring gardens.
Echo Point – The Three Sisters
The Three Sisters is best seen from Echo Point lookout, just outside the national park, on the edge of the plateau above. These three weathered sandstone peaks, formed thousands of years ago through erosion, are set among the cliffs of the Jamison Valley. From the lookout, you’ll be able to see the Ruined Castle and Mount Solitary.
Katoomba
A vibrant and historic town at the heart of the Blue Mountains, Katoomba spoils its guests with spectacular walks and lookouts, rich cultural heritage and great restaurants and bars. Just 90 minutes by car from Sydney, this scenic getaway is famous for its dramatic views of the Three Sisters and Jamison Valley.
It’s also a place where history, the arts, breath-taking natural scenery and café culture merge, making it a fascinating place to explore at a leisurely pace – on foot.
