Russian Orthodox Old-Rite Church

The Russian Orthodox Old-Rite Church is an Eastern Orthodox church that originated from a split in the Russian Orthodox Church in the 17th century. The Old Believers, also known as Old Ritualists, rejected reforms to the Russian Orthodox Church. The Old Believers maintain the liturgical and ritual practices of the Russian Orthodox Church as they were before the reforms of Patriarch Nikon.
The Russian Old Rite Orthodox Christian Church was built in between 1991-2001. The construction of this Church is related to the fifth wave of Russian migration to Australia during the 1990s following the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

Rookwood Cemetery and Necropolis Precinct

Lidcombe’s history dates back to 1828, when ex-convicts and free settlers established small farms on granted land. The arrival of the railway, along with the development of stockyards, abattoirs, and a vast cemetery, brought prosperity to what was then known as Rookwood. Throughout the twentieth century, waves of industrial growth, economic shifts, and new migration patterns reshaped the suburb’s character.
At the heart of this history lies Rookwood Cemetery and Necropolis Precinct, one of the largest and most significant cemeteries in the Southern Hemisphere. Established in 1867 and now heritage-listed, it serves not only as a final resting place but also as an open-air museum, featuring remarkable monuments, historic graves, and striking architecture. As you wander through its beautifully landscaped grounds, you’ll uncover the stories of notable figures, admire intricate memorials, and experience the tranquil beauty that echoes Sydney’s past. Whether you’re drawn to history, architecture, or a peaceful retreat, Rookwood Cemetery offers a unique and thought-provoking journey.

Lidcombe Hospital Precinct

Lidcombe Hospital was a large institution of a kind common in the nineteenth century. As the focus of care changed over time, men, women, the aged, influenza victims, surgical patients and others were looked after there. The piggery, dairy, vegetable gardens and poultry run were all sustained by the inmates until the 1950s.
You can explore the rich history and modern transformation of the Lidcombe Hospital Precinct, located in Brooks Court in the heart of Lidcombe. This heritage-listed site, once a hospital and home for the aged, was designed by renowned architects James Barnet, Walter Liberty Vernon, Cobden Parkes, and Ken Woolley, with construction beginning in 1885. Known by various names throughout its history, including the Rookwood Asylum for the Aged, and Infirm and Lidcombe State Hospital & Home, the precinct is now repurposed as private housing, blending historical architecture with contemporary living. Visitors can enjoy the peaceful green spaces, admire the beautifully restored buildings, and learn about the fascinating past of this iconic site.
