Itinerary highlights
Day 1 – Melbourne → Great Ocean Road
Your journey begins with a relaxed hotel pick-up and a drive through Melbourne’s western suburbs toward the coast. As the city fades, the open road unfolds. Our first stop Bells Beach, where powerful surf meets dramatic cliffs.
We continue along the Surf Coast, stopping for stories at Memorial Arch and wandering the charming streets of Lorne, Victoria’s coastal gem. Watch for kangaroos in open paddocks and koalas in the eucalyptus trees near Kennett River.
After lunch by the sea, we may venture into the Great Otway National Park, where a rainforest walk at Maits Rest reveals a world of ferns, towering trees, and birdsong. The day ends in the relaxed coastal village of Apollo Bay or Port Campbell, where we’ll recommend hand-picked local accommodation and a spot for dinner by the water.
Day 2 – Great Ocean Road → Grampians
This morning, we reach the most famous stretch of the Great Ocean Road: the Shipwreck Coast. Arriving early, we avoid the crowds at the Twelve Apostles and descend the Gibson Steps, where you can feel the power of the Southern Ocean from beach level.
Next is Loch Ard Gorge, where your guide shares the dramatic story of shipwreck and survival that brings the landscape to life. Explore the rock formations of The Razorback and Island Archway, and if you’re keen, walk the boardwalks at London Bridge, The Grotto, and Bay of Martyrs.
This afternoon, we head inland through open farmland and sheep-grazing country. The mountains of Gariwerd (the Grampians) begin to rise in the distance. This region has been home to the Djab Wurrung and Jardwadjali people for tens of thousands of years. Upon arrival in Halls Gap or Dunkeld, we’ll settle in for the night surrounded by native bushland and likely a few kangaroos on the lawn.
Day 3: Grampians National Park → Melbourne
Wake to birdsong and prepare to explore one of Victoria’s most sacred and awe-inspiring landscapes. The Grampians (Gariwerd) are not only known for their dramatic sandstone ridgelines and lush valleys, but also for their deep Indigenous cultural significance.
Your day can include a guided walk to The Pinnacle Lookout or a gentler visit to Boroka Lookout for panoramic views over the Wimmera plains. At McKenzie Falls, you’ll feel the cool spray of cascading water as you descend into a sheltered gorge.
We’ll also take time to explore the cultural heritage of Gariwerd, visiting a rock art site such as Bunjil’s Shelter, one of the most important Indigenous sites in Victoria.
For those who enjoy local food and wine, we can stop at a Grampians winery like Best’s Great Western or Mount Langi Ghiran, or enjoy a gourmet lunch at the celebrated Royal Mail Hotel in Dunkeld before beginning the relaxed return to Melbourne in the late afternoon.
