Brunton’s Bridge Campground, three hours drive east of Melbourne, is one of Gippsland’s most popular camping destinations and a great base for adventure lovers.
It is a popular family camping spot by a heritage-listed bridge on the Thomson River, close to the historic town of Walhalla.
Set on the Thomson River, it provides direct access to the Thomson River Canoe Trail and is close to many four-wheel-drive tracks.
It has several level campsites set into a tiered hillside and only basic facilities.
For those interested in gold-era history, nearby Horseshoe Bend Tunnel is a must-do walk and an example of mining ingenuity. The historic township of Walhalla is less than 15 minutes drive away. If you head down Brunton’s Bridge Road and along the river, you’ll find a pebbly beach and swimming area – perfect for a dip on warmer days.
This campground is best accessed by four-wheel-drive by crossing the Thomson River. Forest roads may be rough or slippery depending on local conditions.
River flow can be strong following rain or environmental releases from the Thomson Dam. Always check local river heights and current environmental releases when planning your trip.
If visiting during peak periods, make sure you have an alternate plan such as the nearby Coopers Creek camping area or Thomson Bridge Campground.
