Child Island is one of the most exciting dive sites at the Keppel Islands off Yeppoon. Being a fair distance offshore, Child Island is best dived when conditions are calm, but this site nearly always has the best visibility in the area.
Around Child Island are rocky reefs covered in coral in depths to 30 metres, and while you can jump in just about anywhere and have a great dive, the most action packed dive site would have to be The Gulch. This 30 metre deep channel between Child and Barren Islands features walls covered in wonderful corals, such as gorgonians, sea whips, black corals and soft corals. Pelagic fish cruise this gutter, so expect to see trevally, barracuda, batfish, mackerel and even cobia. Other species to look out for in The Gulch include wobbegongs, stingrays, gropers, eagle rays and sea snakes.
