The mural was created as part of celebrations for the United Nations International Youth Year in 1985.

It is recognised as one of the earliest Water Tank Murals in Australia.

The work was directed by Launceston artist Diana North and NSW artist Wayne Hutchins. They were assisted by George Town residents Michelle Johns and Darren Viney. Also particpating were a group of local helpers: Cathy, Kevin, Jenny and Heath.
