Itinerary highlights
Former 'Native location'.
The first European settlers established what they called the ‘Native location’ in this Park to try to restrict the movements of the Kaurna people, Missionaries established a school here, a store and huts.
Site of public hangings
In the 1800s, crowds used to attend grisly executions – with condemned prisoners strung up from a large tree off War Memorial Drive on what is now the North Adelaide Golf Course.
30 different tree species
Huge Moreton Bay fig trees, lemon-scented gums, river red gums and pepper trees are among the hundreds of trees from 30 species that line the golf course fairways and the edges of War Memorial Drive and Mills Terrace
Golf courses
Most of this Park comprises three public golf courses, wrapping around the western side of North Adelaide. The first was established in the 1890s although in those days golfers were hindered by cattle and sheep wandering onto the course. Plans have been drawn up to change the layout of the courses.
Historic buildings on Mills Terrace
One of the most prominent buildings facing the Park is the 1880 Calvary Hospital. For more than 100 years it’s been closely tied to the Roman Catholic “Sisters of the Little Company of Mary.” More than 80,000 babies have been born here.
Torrens Weir
This weir maintains the water level in the Torrens lake. Built in 1928 it replaced an earlier flimsier construction that was washed away in floodwaters
