A guided stroll around one of the most beautiful parts of the Adelaide Park Lands –
Hosted by APA Park Ambassador Peter Sansom. You’ll learn some surprising history about not just Veale Gardens but also the larger Veale Park, and discover some of its hidden treasures – including a community garden and a dense thicket of re-greened bushland.
Children; and dogs on leads are most welcome. Start at the tram stop on Peacock Road, near the corner of South Terrace.
Itinerary highlights
Veale Gardens
Designed and built in the eary 1960’s, Veale Gardens is one of the most scenie places in the Park Lands with huge flower beds, tall trees, lawns and picnic spots.
The rock grottos and water features
A series of six rock grottos, pools and fountains connected by a stream – one of which was a murder scene.
Walyu Yarta Community Garden
Local volunteers maintain a diverse patch of vegetables and flowers, with colourful decorations and a ‘bee hotel’
Native bush regeneration site
A large area in the centre of the Park has been regenerated as native bush with a narrow walking trail through the regrown scrub.
Public art
Three of Adelaide’s unusual statues are found here in Veale Gardens. Two of them – ‘The Couple’, ‘Pan’ were installed in the 1960’s but it was only in 2018 when Adelaide’s sister city in China, Qing Dao, donated the latest work – the ‘Song of the Wind’
Southern sports facilities
Wide open areas available for soccer and a model aircraft zone, as well as fenced areas for basketball and tennis.

Adelaide Park Lands Walking Tours
Guided Walks to explore little-known nooks and crannies of Adelaide’s greatest treasure: the unique open spaces of its Park Lands.
Adelaide is the only city in the world garlanded by Park Lands. In effect the city is built inside a park, and each part of the Park has its own unique features, heritage, and current usage.
Guided Walks are led by trained Tour leaders and can take between 90 minutes and two hours depending upon the location.
