Katie Chancellor is a contemporary artist based in the heritage city of Ballarat in regional Victoria. Chancellor’s practice brings joy, vibrancy and colour to brighten people’s lives through the creation of her imaginative and whimsical artworks.

Reminiscent of her urban art paste ups, each piece is carefully jig-sawed out, hand painted and then set free into the world. Creatures: heart and home at Unicorn lane features brightly painted bird and creature artworks adorning the space. The works explore themes of wonder, curiosity, playfulness and joy; feelings often overlooked in typical fast paced lives.

Spending more time in nature while raising her young children at home has inspired her latest exhibition. Native fauna encountered along the nearby Yarrowee/Yaramlok river and surrounding bushland encouraged reflection, imagination and connection with the spirit of the Wadawarrung and Dja Dja Wurrung country. Researching Aboriginal creation stories of birds and creatures helped Chancellor gain a greater understanding of the cultural significance of each; and their associations with nature. This in turn influenced her creative practice, sparking her exploration of
colour and design.

Created slowly and with love over the past year, often with a child on her lap eager to join in and make their mark; Creatures: heart and home is a celebration of nature, love and community.
