Richmond Gaol Historic Site
Richmond Gaol is the oldest intact gaol in Australia, located just a 20-minute drive north-east of Hobart.
The Gaol was built in 1825 and is one of the best preserved convict structures still existing in Tasmania. You can step inside a solitary confinement cell measuring just one by two metres (6×3 feet). One of the Gaol’s most infamous inmates was English convict, Ikey Solomon, said to be the model for Charles Dicken’s character Fagin in Oliver Twist.
The Gaol housed both Men and Women. You’ll see chain-gang sleeping rooms, the flogging yards, the cook house and holding rooms, all with historical relics and documents to bring the convict past to life.
Fully stocked souvenir and gift shop located on site.
The gaol is open daily from 0900 to 1700 (closed Christmas Day).

Explore Tasmania's chilling convict history
Step inside Australia’s oldest intact gaol (c1825) where convict-built stone walls hold centuries of stories. Enter the solitary confinement cell (1m x 2m) where Ikey Solomon – the inspiration for Dicken’s Fagin in Oliver Twist – once languished. Wander through chain-gang sleeping rooms, flogging yards and cells where winter’s cold seeps through sandstone, as it did for inmates 200 years ago. Self-guided exploration lets you move at your own pace. Mention Off Season for 10% off entry.
