Only a short drive from the Gold Coast are some of the world’s best preserved stands of sub-tropical rainforests in Lamington National Park.
From Nerang, head south-west into Lamington National Park. After Beechmont, follow a rainforest drive through the Binna Burra section, home to hundreds of waterfalls and walking trails. Or continue on to Canungra, where you can turn off for the O’Reilly’s Green Mountains section. Try the 16-metre high Tree Top Walk, see glow worm caves and swing across the rainforest on a flying fox. Walk short sections of the Gold Coast Hinterland Great Walk, or spend four days hiking the entire 54 kilometre trail.
Back on the scenic, winding road, drive to Tamborine Mountain, where you can visit vineyards, hang glide off the mountain or browse art and antique shops on the Gallery Walk. Nearby Mount Tamborine National Park is the place to picnic, spot platypus and walk to Curtis Falls through a stand of piccabeen palms.

Binna Burra Section, Lamington National Park
Stretching out across the McPherson Ranges, this UNESCO World Heritage listed area comprises Australia’s largest remnant of sub-tropical rainforest.
Lamington is characterised by rugged mountain scenery, breathtaking lookouts, tumbling waterfalls, caves, fern gullies and more than 160 kilometres of Australia’s most diverse walking trails. It is home to an incredible variety of wildlife and bird species.
Take a stroll along one of the many walks in Lamington National Park or have a coffee and enjoy the view at Binna Burra Lodge. Overnight accommodation is also available with choices ranging from award-winning sky lodges, through to safari tents and other camping options.
O'Reilly's Green Mountains Section, Lamington National Park
The Green Mountains section of Lamington National Park is home to O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat.
O’Reilly’s has a cafe with great views and a variety of tours open to day trippers. Board a four wheel drive bus for a guided rainforest tour to the mystical Glow Worm grotto, home to millions of ancient Glow Worms, or try a Wildlife Encounter, Segway Safari or Flying Fox Adventure. There is also bird feeding and a suspended walk through the rainforest called the Tree Top Walk.
Take a walk to the beautiful Elabana Falls, a popular spot with photographers. From O’Reilly’s, take the border track through the rainforest for 1.7 kilometres and turn left on to the Box Forest Circuit. At the next intersection turn right and continue downhill past Picnic Rock to another intersection. Elabana Falls is 140 metres to the left.
Back on the road, make a stop at the O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards to stretch your legs or enjoy a gourmet picnic basket along the banks of the Canungra Creek.
Mount Tamborine
Mount Tamborine is a 28 square kilometre plateau with breathtaking scenery and a range of things to do in the area.
Explore the rainforest canopies on the Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk, a spectacular elevated walkway through the beautiful middle and upper canopies of the rainforest. The walkway is a stable, high-tech steel structure enabling visitors to explore these canopies in a safe and secure way. See rockpools, waterfalls, a butterfly lookout and sheltered rest areas along the way.
If you’re feeling more adventurous, take the TreeTop Challenge, with Australia’s largest guided zip line tour and High Ropes Adventure Park, suitable for a range of ages.
Stroll up and down the famous Gallery Walk filled with over 60 gift stores, boutiques, cafes and art galleries. Watch the hang gliders as they dive off the mountain or walk to Curtis Falls through a stand of Piccabeen Palms. A variety of accommodation options are available on the mountain if you would like to extend your stay.
Choose to return to the starting point of this journey via the Pacific Motorway, or continue your journey from an alternate route out of Mount Tamborine.
