Itinerary highlights

Goolwa Main Wharf

Goolwa Main Wharf
Your Murray River Day Cruise begins at the historic Goolwa Main Wharf, a landmark steeped in river heritage and the perfect departure point for your journey upstream to Murray Bridge.

Once a bustling hub of trade and transport, the wharf has been carefully preserved and now blends historic charm with modern vibrancy. From here, guests step aboard our comfortable vessel to travel through the Lower Murray, passing river towns, towering cliffs, and sweeping landscapes along the way.

Before departure, take a moment to explore the wharf precinct. Wooden boats and yachts line the river, while nearby cafes, galleries, and sandstone buildings reflect the relaxed character of Goolwa. The wharf also plays host to community markets and the renowned biennial Wooden Boat Festival, celebrating the town’s proud maritime traditions.

With its blend of history, culture, and stunning river views, Goolwa Main Wharf is more than just the starting point of your cruise, it’s a destination in its own right, and the perfect introduction to the Murray River experience.

Lake Alexandrina

Lake Alexandrina
A highlight of the Murray River Day Cruise is the crossing of Lake Alexandrina, the largest freshwater lake in South Australia and an unforgettable part of the Murray–Darling Basin. Spanning over 600 square kilometres, this vast inland lake forms a spectacular backdrop as our vessel makes its way from Goolwa towards Murray Bridge.

Fed by the mighty Murray River, Lake Alexandrina is a Ramsar-listed wetland of international significance, supporting abundant birdlife, wetlands, and vital ecosystems. Pelicans, swans, and migratory shorebirds are often seen gliding across the open waters, while the surrounding low-lying shores and reed beds create a tranquil contrast to the grandeur of the lake itself.

The crossing offers guests a unique perspective, cruising across the broad expanse of water that has sustained communities, wildlife, and Ngarrindjeri culture for thousands of years. The lake has long been a place of deep cultural significance, with stories, traditions, and connections to Country stretching back millennia.

Expansive and beautiful, Lake Alexandrina is more than just a crossing point on your cruise, it’s a breathtaking natural feature that showcases the scale, history, and ecological importance of the Murray River system.

Wellington

Wellington
Wellington is a charming riverside town and a highlight on the Murray River Day Cruise. Established in the 1840s, it is one of the oldest river crossings in South Australia and has long served as a key gateway between the Murray River and the South East.

The town is best known for the historic Wellington Ferry, Australia’s oldest continually operating river ferry. Crossing here has been part of daily life for generations, and guests on the cruise gain a unique waterside view of this iconic service still in operation today.

Today, Wellington is a peaceful settlement with riverside charm, where heritage buildings, wetlands, and sweeping river views come together. For guests on the Murray River Day Cruise, it is a memorable point along the journey, where the history of trade, travel, and community meets the timeless flow of the river.

Tailem Bend

Tailem Bend
Perched high above the Murray River, Tailem Bend is a striking riverside town and a key highlight of the Murray River Day Cruise. Its elevated position provides sweeping views of the river as it winds its way past red cliffs, wetlands, and farmland.

Founded in the late 1800s as a railway hub, Tailem Bend quickly became an important link for river trade and transport. Today, it retains its country-town character while offering a unique perspective on the Murray’s history and landscapes.

The town’s name is derived from the Ngarrindjeri words “thelim” (bend) and “thauwi” (river), reflecting its cultural significance to the Traditional Owners who have lived along these banks for tens of thousands of years. Their stories and deep connection to Country add richness to the experience of passing by Tailem Bend on the river.

For cruise guests, Tailem Bend offers a chance to admire the dramatic views from the water, with towering cliffs on one side and the township rising proudly on the other. It’s a place where history, culture, and scenery meet, an impressive marker on the journey.

Murray Bridge

Murray Bridge
The Murray River Day Cruise concludes at Murray Bridge, a vibrant regional centre and one of South Australia’s most iconic river towns. Named after the historic road and rail bridge completed in 1879, the first to span the Murray River in South Australia, the town has long been a hub for trade, transport, and community along the river.

From the water, Murray Bridge offers a spectacular arrival. The twin bridges frame sweeping views of the river, cliffs, and town foreshore, where pelicans glide effortlessly and locals gather along the banks. The bridge itself remains a powerful symbol of connection, linking not only the two sides of the river but also the past and present of the Murraylands region.

Today, Murray Bridge is a thriving destination with cafes, galleries, and parks lining the waterfront. For cruise guests, it provides a fitting opportunity to step ashore, reflect on the journey upstream/downstream, and appreciate the scale, history, and vitality of South Australia’s mighty Murray River.
