Our adventure begins at Simpsons Gap, a sacred site featuring a permanent waterhole and the chance to spot wildlife, including rock wallabies. Learn about its deep Aboriginal cultural significance and Dreamtime stories.
Next, we visit Standley Chasm (Angkerle Atwatye), a dramatic 80-metre-high gorge where towering red rock walls glow in the sunlight. We then continue to Ellery Creek Big Hole (Udepata), a stunning waterhole framed by cliffs and sandy banks. Enjoy a refreshing swim or relax while a picnic lunch is served in this tranquil setting.
Our journey continues to the Ochre Pits, a vibrant and culturally significant site used for thousands of years by Aboriginal people for art and ceremony. The striking colours offer a unique glimpse into the region’s heritage.
Finally, explore Ormiston Gorge, where towering red cliffs and scenic walking trails showcase the raw beauty of the landscape. After a day of exploration, we return to Alice Springs with lasting memories of the West MacDonnell Ranges.

Itinerary highlights
Standley Chasm
Known traditionally as Angkerle Atwatye, meaning “Gap of Water”, Standley Chasm is a 3-metre-wide, 80-metre-high gorge amongst the West MacDonnell Ranges. We hope to spot the native wildlife as we explore this beautifully rugged area.
Ellery Creek Bighole
Take a dip or admire the surrounding of in Ellery Creek Bighole, known traditionally as Udepata, surrounded by tall red cliffs and sandy Ellery Creek.
Ormiston Gorge
Where massive geological forces created the towering red walls of Ormiston Gorge. Spend time here admiring nature and its finest.
Simpsons Gap
Another amazing feature of the Tjoritja West MacDonnells region, Simpsons Gap, where several dreaming trails and stories cross. Featuring a permanent waterhole this is also a great place to spot resident wildlife.
