In the square, there’s a tribute to 19th Century Afghan cameleers, a long-lost tram route, and the site of air raid shelters from World War Two, as well as the 21st century innovations that have made the square a focus for local recreation.
Itinerary highlights
The former "Bushman's Club" on the south side of the Square
The bluestone wings east and west of the present William Booth Memorial Home operated by the Salvation Army are the only remains of the Bushmen’s Club, which began in 1870 on the site previously occupied by the Supreme Court building and the former 1840’s home of Judge Cooper.
1898 "Girl's Club" – now St Vincent de Paul
The “Lady Victoria-Buxton Girl’s Club” was founded ‘to provide rooms where factory girls and others living in West Adelaide might meet for amusement and instruction’. It developed into a hostel for 25 girls. Now a homeless shelter operated by St Vincent de Paul
"Voyagers"
A public artwork entitled Voyagers is on the west side of the square, not far from the Adelaide Mosque in Little Gilbert Street. The sculpture commemorates ‘Afghan’ cameleers who migrated to South Australia during the nineteenth century to work in outback areas. Some of these cameleers worshipped at the mosque and lived out their days in nearby cottages in the South West.
