Located on the fringe of Darwin’s northern suburbs, Holmes Jungle Nature Park is a popular destination for picnicking, walking and birdwatching year-round. Cyclists and horse riders are also welcome, with a shared track available for both activities.

The park offers panoramic views from the main picnic area, overlooking wetlands to the north, monsoon forest to the east and savannah woodlands and ridges to the south. Palm Creek winds through the centre of the park, which covers 250 hectares.

Holmes Jungle protects a rare patch of monsoon forest within a largely urban landscape. Explore the Jungle Walk, which follows Palm Creek through lush forest, or take the Woodland Walk, linking the Hilltop Picnic Area with the Jungle Picnic Area.

The park is a haven for wildlife, particularly birds. In the wet season, look for Spangled Drongos and Torres Strait Imperial-pigeons. Throughout the year, you may spot the vibrant Red-backed Fairy-wren darting through clumps of pandanus.

Vehicle access is permitted from 8 am to 6 pm, though some roads may close during the wet season (October to April).
