In the 1920’s a series of Locks and weirs were installed along the River Murray. These structures were built to divert water to the emerging agriculture industry and also to improve navigation of Paddle Steamers and boats along the river, which enabled delivery of goods to townships and properties along the river system.

There are six locks in the Riverland. In the Berri region, Lock 4 on Nitschke Road is just a few minutes out of Berri heading towards Loxton.

The lock has free BBQ’s and picnic area for public use and if you are lucky you may see a boat going through the lock chamber.

Lock 4 can also be seen from the Kataraptko National Park on the Berri side of the river.
