Potts Point has been entertaining locals and visitors alike since the 1940s and she does it well. Whether you’re dining alfresco on a vibrant laneway with seventies-style lights or in an eccentric old terrace house of a back street, you will feel the history but also enjoy the innovation of the young chefs and mixologists who call PoPo home. The grandness of the Macleay Street Art Deco apartment blocks and dining rooms will transport you to Europe but with an Australian accent.
The Sydney Connection takes private bookings for two – six guests per booking and visits four venues on each walk, enjoying a different course at each venue accompanied by matching wine.
Bookings are essential.
Itinerary highlights
Bar Hernandaz
Bar Hernandaz is a modern day homage to old-school European wine and aperitivo bars and the starting point for our Potts Point Dining Tour.
The bar is part of the growing Spanton Hospitality Group, the same team behind the revival of iconic Sydney institution Piccolo Bar situated just around the corner in the Roslyn Quarter of Potts Point.
The warm, red neon lite room is located on the former site of Cafe Hernandez, a 24-hour Spanish Cafe that lived at the site for 50 years, on the lower half of Kings Cross Road.
Bar Hernandaz honours its predecessor with a focus on all things Spanish – predominately sherry and vermouth. Two house blends of the latter are poured directly from barrels behind the bar.
Caravin
Tucked into the elegant two-level Art Deco space on the ground floor of the New Yorker building and seating just 24 diners, Caravin has been punching above its weight since first opening two years ago on Ward Avenue.
Caravin fast became a Potts Point favourite, the intimate salon space giving the small but efficient team freedom to be playful and inventive. Offering a weekly-changing menu that leans into rustic French flavours, dictated by seasonal produce.
The vibe shifts with the seasons: on warm summer evenings aperitifs flow on the alfresco deck, with the footpath a riot of long limbs, expensive small dogs and stylish people. Whilst in the colder months the cosy, ambient dining room welcomes guests in a warm embrace under the soft glow of a fabulous crystal chandelier.
The crowd is a mix of the young hip professionals, natural wine devotees, and older discerning creatives.
