Itinerary highlights

Second Valley

Named after Colonel Light’s second stop made when he reached Australia, Second Valley was once a major export for interstate steel, wool and flour. Nowday’s, the beach is a popular tourist destination for snorkeling, fishing and cliff jumping.
Expert commentary is provided by skipper and crew on local history of Second Valley.

Rapid Bay

Named after Colonel Light’s ship ‘The Rapid’, Rapid Bay is one of the first colonized places in South Australia! The quarry once mined and exported limestone to Whyalla. Rapid Bay is also home to the largest congregation of Leafy Sea Dragons which can be found diving under the old jetty. Ponder along the coast to see the cliff-faces, quarry remnants and Jetty whilst learning about local history.

Rapid Head

Find blending into the dark rocks and even higher in the cliffs the Long Nosed Fur Seal and, sometimes, the endangered Australian Sea Lion. Look south and you’ll sea the Starfish Hill Windfarm providing power to South Australia, and behind on the horizon Kangaroo Island may appear from the shadows. Commentary is provided on local history, seals and sealions to help you gain an appreciation for our fin-footed friends!

The Big Duck Boat Tours

Join The Big Duck Boat Tours for an unforgettable ocean adventure on South Australia’s wild southern coast. Cruise past spectacular cliffs, offshore islands, and secluded beaches aboard a 12.5-metre expedition-style RIB (rigid inflatable boat), and encounter Southern Right Whales, Humpback Whales, dolphins, endangered sea lions, and long-nosed fur seals in their natural environment.

Just an hour from Adelaide, The Big Duck is the Fleurieu Peninsula’s leading marine wildlife tour operator, offering eco-certified, family-friendly boat tours that connect visitors with the rich biodiversity of Encounter Marine Park. Whale sightings peak from June to September, making winter the perfect time to explore the region by sea.

Departing from Victor Harbor and seasonally from Wirrina Cove, tours cater to both thrill-seekers and those after a calm, scenic cruise. Victor Harbor departures offer exhilarating open-ocean experiences, while Wirrina Cove provides sheltered cruising along the stunning north-western Fleurieu coast.

Founded in 2010 and proudly family-owned, The Big Duck Boat Tours has earned multiple tourism accolades, including Gold in Ecotourism at the 2023 and 2024 South Australian Tourism Awards, and continues to lead in sustainable, nature-based marine tourism.
