George Town remembers!
The obelisk is one of George Town’s memorials in honour of service people who served in many conflicts. It was erected by the Returned Sailors’ Soldiers’ and Airmen’s Imperial League of Australia (known these days as the RSL) and the George Town Community.
The white gravel and concrete obelisk incorporates an original brass plaque commemorating World War One service For King and Country. Embedded brown marble panels are engraved with the names of later conflicts and peacekeeping missions in gold lettering: Borneo, Malaya, Vietnam, Iraq, Timor and Afghanistan.
In Memory of those that served and gave their all. Lest We Forget
There is now a commemorative seat in a shady spot for quiet contemplation.
