Martins Creek is a small country town located between Dungog and Maitland in the Hunter Region. The town is centered on Cory Street, which snakes its way through the centre of the town.

The village of Vacy is located at the junction of the Paterson and Allyn rivers, which was founded in the 1820s as a private town by John Cory, the owner of a large land grant. Vacy began to prosper in the 1850s and was a busy town by the 1870s. It remained a private town until it was sold in 1927 by the Cory family.

Itinerary highlights

St James Anglican Church – Former

The former St James Anglican Church (95 Cory St, Martins Creek) is now a property which is privately owned. It was built about 1921, and It was deconsecrated in April 2017 due to a declining congregation.

Martins Creek Railway Station

The Martins Creek railway precinct is significant for its historical values as a tangible link to the development of the North Coast line as well as the development of the NSW railways. The North Coast line was significant in linking the logging, agricultural and pastoral industries of the north coast to markets in both Sydney and Brisbane leading to significant economic and social impacts for individual townships as well as for NSW generally. The place is significant for its associations with the Martins Creek quarry site that has historical significance as a part of the steam era of the NSW railways.

Vacy

A tiny village on the Paterson River.

Vacy came into existence around 1828 as a private township established by the Cory family. John Cory Sr came out from England with his sons Edward and John Jr in 1823 and they soon received grants in the area. John Jr owned Cory Vale and John Sr owned Vacy. By 1839 both grants were in the hands of another son, Gilbert, who arrived later and became the town’s real patriarch. It remained in the family until the land was subdivided and sold in 1927.

Vacy Bridge

The current bridge at Vacy was built in 1898 after the previous bridge was destroyed by fire in late 1896. It was completed at an approximate cost of £1,750.

Completed in 1898, the Vacy bridge is an early example of an Allan type timber truss road bridge, and in 1998 was in good condition. As a timber truss road bridge, it has many associational links with important historical events, trends, and people, including the expansion of the road network and economic activity throughout NSW, and Percy Allan, the designer of this type of truss.
